Mulch - what's the best for trees and shrubs?

What type of mulch is best? Research shows coarse, light coloured & chunky mulches are the best for conserving water. They last a long time (meaning they're good value!), reflect heat, but most importantly allow water to penetrate between the particles and reach the soil below.
